If you don't fill it, you'll be left with a fairly rough grain that'll collect body oil, dead skin cells, dirt, and various other grunge and eventually look like hell. True oil is a polymerized oil that needs to be applied in thin coats.

Yes, you could just sand that area where the scratches are, then add two coats of the Tru Oil back. And would recommend putting the oil on a lint-free cloth to apply to the body. WebSep 8, 2011 · I just like the way it seems to go on lighter, and finish smoother. As far as cleaning up the tru oil, if the tarnished area isnt too bad, you can hit it (lightly) with some 0000 steel wool, and apply either some orange oil, or another light coat of true oil. I have successfully made my own similar oil/varnish blend that works very well and have used it on a number of furniture projects as well as my old ash bodied P bass.
